Kenny Chesney Biography - Before Country Music
Kenny revealed on many occasions that growing up in Lutrell was a great experience because country music was all around him. But says that he wasn't really interested being a singer as a kid.
Kenny grew up in Lutrell Tennessee, a small town near Knoxville and attended Gibbs High School. Parts of Kennys "I Go Back" video were taped there. He went on to graduate from East Tennessee State University in Johnson City with a degree in marketing back in 1990.
Another interesting part about the Kenny Chesney biography is like most beginning guitar players trying to learn on their first guitar, Kenny Chesney also suffered the "sore fingers" syndrome. And after taking several lessons in the fifth grade, Kenny called it quits.
Perhaps those sore fingers just needed time to mature as Kenny received his first guitar for christmas when he was 19. Guess mom and dad saw some talent deep within. And as we all know, those "sore fingers" were in fact, just temporary.
Before Kenny left for Nashville in 1991, he and some fellow musicians recorded several songs he'd written at a recording studio in Bristol VA. He sold all 1000 copies at some of his bar gigs and purchased a new Martin guitar with the profits.
Kenny paid his dues around Johnson City in bars like Chuckie's Trading Post and the Quarterback Barbeque.
Part of his collection of "odd jobs" included valet parking, telemarketing and being a mailroom sorter.
Kenny Chesney Biography - The Start Of Something Big
Although progress always moves slow when you're looking for that big break, Kenny did manage to secure some gigs at a real honky-tonk called the Turf, which no longer exists.
In 1992 Kenny won a songwriters contract from the Opryland Music Group which opened the door a bit wider.
While appearing at a songwriters showcase in 1993, Capricorn Records gave Kenny his first recording contract. The company eventually folded, but not before "The Tin Man" made it to #70 on Billboard's country singles chart.
Then the call that changed everything occurred when Joe Galante from RCA offered Kenny a recording contract. He signed Kenny to their affiliate BNA, where Kenny has remained until this day.
